  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • Black gel food coloring (to achieve desired color)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round baking pans and line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  3. In another bowl, beat granulated sugar and brown sugar with eggs until fluffy. Mix in oil, buttermilk, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually combine dry ingredients with wet ingredients until just mixed; avoid overmixing.
  5. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Once cooled, frost one layer with cream cheese frosting before stacking the second layer on top. Use additional frosting for decoration.
