  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 1 tbsp coarse sea salt (plus extra for topping)
  • 3 tbsp melted butter

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm water and sugar in a bowl. Add yeast and let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and stir until well combined.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm area until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  5. Punch down the dough, shape it into an oval loaf, and seal the edges.
  6. Prepare a boiling water bath with baking soda and immerse each loaf for 30 seconds per side before placing them on parchment-lined baking sheets.
  7. Sprinkle coarse sea salt on top before baking in a preheated oven at 425°F (220°C) for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Brush with melted butter after baking and let cool slightly before slicing.
