Description

Celebrate traditions with this delicious Rosca de Reyes! A sweet, festive bread topped with candied fruits and sugar, perfect for sharing during the holidays.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (plant-based milk optional)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp orange zest

For Decoration:

  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • Candied fruits (red and green cherries, orange slices)
  • Granulated sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, eggs, softened butter, vanilla extract, and orange zest.
    • Knead the dough until smooth and elastic (about 8-10 minutes). Cover with a damp cloth and let rise for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
  2. Shape the Bread:
    • Once risen, punch down the dough and shape it into an oval ring. Place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
    • Insert a small figurine or dry bean into the dough as part of the tradition (optional). Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  3. Prepare the Topping:
    • Mix the softened butter, powdered sugar, and flour into a smooth paste. Form strips and place them on top of the dough.
  4. Decorate and Bake:
    • Arrange candied fruits on the dough and sprinkle granulated sugar over the top.
    • Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
