Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 1/4 cups warm milk (110°F / 43°C)
- 1/2 cup dried currants (or raisins)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup icing sugar (for icing)
Instructions
- Activate the yeast by mixing warm milk and sugar in a bowl; sprinkle yeast on top and let sit until frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and spices; create a well in the center. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter.
- Mix to form a sticky dough, then knead on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth.
- Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm area until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
- Punch down the dough; fold in soaked dried fruit. Divide into equal pieces and shape into buns; place on parchment-lined baking tray.
- Allow buns to rise again until puffy (about 30 minutes). Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slightly before icing.
- Whisk icing sugar with water until smooth; drizzle over buns to create crosses.
