Description

Indulge in the delightful aroma of freshly baked Traditional Hot Cross Buns, a cherished Easter treat. These soft, spiced buns are studded with juicy currants and topped with a sweet icing cross. Perfect for family gatherings or cozy mornings, they offer a festive touch that will warm your kitchen and hearts alike.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 1/4 cups warm milk (110°F / 43°C)
  • 1/2 cup dried currants (or raisins)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup icing sugar (for icing)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by mixing warm milk and sugar in a bowl; sprinkle yeast on top and let sit until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and spices; create a well in the center. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter.
  3. Mix to form a sticky dough, then knead on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm area until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  5. Punch down the dough; fold in soaked dried fruit. Divide into equal pieces and shape into buns; place on parchment-lined baking tray.
  6. Allow buns to rise again until puffy (about 30 minutes). Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slightly before icing.
  8. Whisk icing sugar with water until smooth; drizzle over buns to create crosses.
