Method
Prepare the Spice Mixture
- In a medium saucepan, combine the water, cinnamon stick, crushed cardamom pods, whole cloves, and sliced ginger. This mixture will infuse the water with aromatic flavors.
Boil the Spices
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. This allows the spices to release their essential oils and flavors into the water.
Add the Tea Leaves
- After simmering, add the black tea leaves to the saucepan. Stir gently to combine. Let it simmer for an additional 5 minutes. The tea leaves will steep and impart their rich flavor to the concentrate.
Strain the Mixture
- Remove the saucepan from heat and use a fine mesh strainer to strain the chai concentrate into a heatproof container. Discard the solids. This step ensures a smooth texture without any gritty bits.
Sweeten the Concentrate
- While the concentrate is still warm, stir in the sugar until fully dissolved. Adjust the sweetness according to your preference.
Add Milk
- To serve, mix equal parts of the chai concentrate with milk (hot or cold) in a cup. For a creamier texture, use whole milk or your preferred milk alternative.
