Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry (about 17.3 ounces total): This gives cruffins their signature flaky texture. Keep it cold while working to maintain its integrity.
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter , softened: This helps the cinnamon sugar stick and adds richness.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar : Sweetens the filling.
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon : Provides the warm, familiar flavor.
  • 1/8 teaspoon fine salt : Enhances the sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract : Adds depth to the flavor.
  • For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar : For a sweet finish.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon : Complements the filling.
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter , melted: Helps the sugar adhere to the cruffins.

Method

Instructions
  1. Prepare the Oven and Muffin Pan. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a standard 12-cup muffin pan with nonstick cooking spray or softened butter. You can also line the cups with small strips of parchment paper for easier removal.
  2. Make the Cinnamon Sugar Filling. In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, salt, and vanilla extract until well combined. Set this mixture aside.
  3. Roll Out the Puff Pastry. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one thawed puff pastry sheet into a rectangle measuring approximately 10 by 12 inches. Use gentle pressure to maintain the layers and keep the pastry cold.
  4. Add the Butter and Cinnamon Sugar. Spread 2 tablespoons of softened butter evenly over the pastry, leaving a small border around the edges. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar mixture over the butter, pressing it gently into the pastry.
  5. Roll the Pastry into a Log. Starting from one long side, roll the pastry tightly into a log, keeping it snug but not overly tight. Repeat this process with the second sheet of puff pastry.
  6. Chill the Pastry Logs. Refrigerate both pastry logs for 10 to 15 minutes to firm them up, making them easier to slice.
  7. Cut the Logs. Using a sharp knife, cut each log into 6 equal pieces, resulting in 12 pieces total. Then, cut each piece lengthwise down the center to reveal the cinnamon swirls.
  8. Shape the Cruffins. Take two strips and twist them together, then coil them into a loose spiral. Place each cruffin into a muffin cup, ensuring the cut sides are facing outward.
  9. Bake the Cruffins. Bake for 20 to 24 minutes, until the cruffins are golden-brown and puffed up. Avoid opening the oven door during the first 15 minutes to maintain the temperature.
  10. Prepare the Cinnamon Sugar Coating. While the cruffins bake, mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon for the coating in a shallow bowl and melt the butter in another bowl.
  11. Coat the Warm Cruffins. Let the cruffins cool in the pan for 3 to 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Brush each cruffin lightly with melted butter and roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  12. Serve. Enjoy the cruffins warm, dusted with powdered sugar or drizzled with vanilla glaze for an extra touch.

Notes

Keep the puff pastry cold while working to ensure the layers remain flaky.
