Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp ground cardamom
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp orange juice

Instructions

  1. 1. Activate the yeast: In a bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top; let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. 2. Make the dough: In a large bowl, mix flour, cardamom, orange zest, salt, melted butter, and eggs. Add yeast mixture; stir to form a soft dough.
  3. 3. Knead: Turn onto a floured surface and knead for about 8 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl; cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled (about 1 hour).
  4. 4. Prepare the filling: Mix brown sugar and cinnamon; set aside.
  5. 5. Roll out: Punch down the dough and roll into a rectangle (½ inch thick). Spread softened butter over it and sprinkle with the sugar-cinnamon mixture.
  6. 6. Shape and bake: Roll tightly into a log, slice into pieces, and place cut-side up in a greased dish. Let rise again (30 minutes), then bake at 375°F for about 25 minutes until golden brown. Drizzle with glaze when slightly cooled.
